RESUMO

Echocardiography is commonly used in veterinary clinical practice for many species but is not as easily applied in non-sedated marine mammals. Additionally, Doppler echocardiography provides further information on hemodynamics, estimation of cardiac output, characterization of flow patterns, and diastolic function. However, its applications in marine mammals have not been as widely explored either. The present report aimed to characterize the left ventricle structure and function of the Southern Sea Lion (Otaria flavescens) through a Doppler echocardiography study. Data were obtained from a healthy animal trained for different veterinary examination routines. This communication constitutes the first report of Doppler echocardiography with stroke volume, and cardiac output measurement in pinnipeds, and the first report of measurement of myocardial performance index in aquatic mammals. This data brought initial information about in vivo structure and function of the heart of the Southern Sea Lion that can be safely and effectively evaluated with the use of transthoracic Doppler echocardiography. Our data have both clinical and research implications for future studies evaluating diseases of the cardiopulmonary system in pinnipeds, and cardiovascular physiology investigation in diving mammals.

INTRODUCTION: Diastolic dysfunction is an early clinical feature of feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). The left ventricular filling in early diastole is facilitated by the diastolic intraventricular pressure gradient (IVPG). The study objectives were to evaluate color Doppler M-mode-derived IVPG calculation in cats as a non-invasive assessment of the left ventricular relaxation property to determine the normal ranges of peak IVPG in cats and investigate the influence of left ventricular function and heart rate (HR). ANIMALS: One hundred and six client-owned apparently healthy cats. METHODS: Prospective cross-sectional study. Quantitative analysis of color Doppler M-mode images was used to estimate total and segmental IVPGs non-invasively. RESULTS: The total IVPG was 0.76 mmHg (95% reference interval (RI): 0.28-1.29 mmHg), the basal IVPG 0.34 mmHg (95% RI: 0.07-0.63 mmHg), and the mid-apical IVPG 0.42 mmHg (95% RI: 0.15-0.71 mmHg). Total and segmental IVPG increased with HR (P < 0.003), while segmental percent IVPG was HR independent. A short isovolumic relaxation time (IVRT) and a high mitral annular velocity in early diastole were associated with an increase in total IVPG (P = 0.008 and P = 0.009, respectively) adjusted for HR. An increase in IVPG was associated with an increase in mitral inflow velocity (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Feline IVPGs increase with HR and a short IVRT, which was believed to be a normal physiologic adrenergic response associated with an increased sympathetic tone. Future studies of segmental IVPG changes in feline HCM are needed to evaluate the clinical applicability of color Doppler M-mode estimated IVPGs in feline cardiology.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the predictive value of right axis deviation of the mean electrical axis (MEA) in assessing the severity of pulmonic stenosis (PS) in dogs. ANIMALS: Records for 218 client-owned dogs diagnosed between 2014 and 2020 with PS as determined by Doppler echocardiography. PROCEDURES: University of Florida Small Animal Clinic medical records were reviewed, and signalment and clinical risk variables (murmur grade and clinical signs) were extracted. MEA was determined from ECG records by use of leads I and III. Predictive potential of MEA and associated risk factors to diagnose PS severity (mild [< 50 mm Hg], moderate, or severe [> 75 mm Hg]) were assessed by receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis and quantile regression. RESULTS: Records for 88 dogs were eligible for analysis. Greater PS severity was associated with smaller breeds presenting with ECG abnormalities, overt clinical signs, and high-category murmur grades (IV and V). Mean MEA increased with stenosis severity category, with an average of 62° for mild, 113° for moderate, and 157° for severe. Each 10° increase in MEA corresponded to an approximately 5-mm Hg increase in PG. Increasing PS severity was associated with MEA right axis deviation > 100° and the more severe cases (PG > 75 mm Hg) with MEA right axis deviation > -180°. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Mean electrical axis right axis deviation may be a useful screening metric for dogs with suspected moderate to severe PS.

This study used B-mode and Doppler ultrasonography to characterize the abdominal structures of healthy peccaries raised in captivity. Fifteen peccaries were used for this study. The urinary vesicle appeared as an ovoid structure, located in the abdominal and pelvic transition, with a hyperechogenic, thin, smooth, and regular wall. The kidneys presented retroperitoneal topography and had similar sizes. The kidney/aorta ratio had an average value of 10.53±15cm (right) and 10.23±0.12 (left). The right adrenal gland had a length of 1.93±0.34cm and diameter of 0.56±0.16cm. The left adrenal gland had a length of 1.85±0.42cm and diameter of 0.52±0.11cm. The spleen had a diameter of 1.13±0.18cm. The hepatic vein demonstrated polyphasic flow in pulsed Doppler, with two retrograde peaks and an anterograde peak with a flow velocity of 25.7±0.83cm/s. The abdominal aorta had a diameter of 0.58±0.05cm and a flow velocity of 115.17±5.32cm/s. The morphological and hemodynamic study of the abdominal structures of the peccary, observed through B-mode and Doppler ultrasonography, aided in identifying the size, shape, position, echogenicity, and echotexture of the abdominal organs and in making inferences about the normal parameters for these structures in this species.(AU)


Este estudo teve como objetivo utilizar as ultrassonografias de modo-B e Doppler para caracterizar as estruturas abdominais de um cateto sadio criado em cativeiro. Quinze catetos foram utilizados para este estudo. A vesícula urinária apareceu como uma estrutura ovoide, localizada na transição entre as partes abdominal e pélvica, com uma parede hiperecogênica, fina, lisa e regular. Os rins apresentaram topografia retroperitoneal e tamanhos semelhantes. A relação rim/aorta teve um valor médio de 10,53 ± 15cm (direita) e 10,23 ± 0,12cm (esquerda). A glândula adrenal direita tinha um comprimento de 1,93 ± 0,34cm e um diâmetro de 0,56 ± 0,16cm. A glândula suprarrenal esquerda tinha um comprimento de 1,85 ± 0,42cm e um diâmetro de 0,52 ± 0,11cm. O baço tinha um diâmetro de 1,13 ± 0,18cm. A veia hepática demonstrou fluxo polifásico no Doppler pulsátil, com dois picos retrógrados e um pico anterógrado com velocidade de fluxo de 25,7±0,83cm/s. A aorta abdominal tinha um diâmetro de 0,58 ± 0,05cm e uma velocidade de fluxo de 115,17±5,32cm/s. Os estudos morfológico e hemodinâmico das estruturas abdominais do queixada, observadas por meio das ultrassonografias modo-B e Doppler, auxiliaram na identificação do tamanho, da forma, da posição, da ecogenicidade e da ecotextura dos órgãos abdominais e na realização de inferências sobre os parâmetros de normalidade para as estruturas nas espécies.(AU)

Echocardiographic evaluation is a diagnostic tool for the in vivo diagnosis of heart diseases. Specific and unique anatomical characteristics of the ophidian heart such as the single ventricular cavity, a tubular sinus venosus opening into the right atrium, the presence of three arterial trunks and extreme mobility in the coelomic cavity during the cardiac cycle directly affect echocardiographic examination. Twenty-one awake, healthy ball pythons (Python regius) were analysed based on guidelines for performing echocardiographic examinations. Imaging in the sagittal plane demonstrated the caudal vena cava, sinus venosus valve (SVV) and right atrium and the various portions of the ventricle, horizontal septum, left aortic arch and pulmonary artery. Transverse imaging depicted the spatial relationship of the left and right aortic arches, the pulmonary artery and the horizontal septum. Basic knowledge of cardiac blood flow in reptiles is necessary to understand the echocardiographic anatomy. The flow of the arterial trunks and SVV was analysed using pulsed-wave Doppler based on the approach used for humans and companion mammals. The walls and diameters of the cavum arteriosum, cavum venosum and cavum pulmonale were also evaluated. This study should improve the veterinarian's knowledge of ophidian heart basal physiology and contribute to the development of cardiology in reptiles.

The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the cardioprotective effects of carvedilol in dogs receiving doxorubicin chemotherapy and provide suggestions to future studies based on results and limitations of our study. Thirteen dogs were randomized into two experimental groups: 6 dogs in carvedilol group and 7 dogs in placebo group. In carvedilol group, 0.39 mg/kg ± 0.04 twice-daily oral carvedilol was started on the day of the first doxorubicin treatment and continued throughout the chemotherapy protocol until the final cardiological evaluation. Cardiological evaluations were performed before the first doxorubicin administration and then 10 to 15 days after each subsequent dose. Troponin I and oxidative stress tests were performed with serum collected from dogs at the initial and final cardiological evaluation. Carvedilol produced some echocardiographic and electrocardiographic changes (reduced E velocity and E/IVRT ratio, as well reduced heart rate and increased PR and QT interval) due to its beta-block effect. In placebo group Doppler study showed a significant increase in mitral flow deceleration time (EDT), as well increased amplitude of the S wave in the right, and R wave in the left, precordial chest leads. There were significant difference in the EDT, E/IVRT and A' velocity, as well heart rate, PR interval and R wave in V4/CV6LU precordial chest lead between groups. In conclusion, some indexes of diastolic function and in precordial chest leads were less affected by doxorubicin in carvedilol than in control group. This suggests that carvedilol may have a beneficial effect in canine cancer patients receiving doxorubicin.

Echocardiographic studies in human neonatology has demonstrated that prematurity can lead to cardiovascular dysfunction and especially compromises the left ventricular (LV) systolic and diastolic functions. As echocardiographic studies have not been performed on cardiovascular dysfunction in premature calves, we echocardiographically evaluated and compared the LV systolic and diastolic function in full-term and premature calves. We followed the hemodynamical changes of LV during first 3 days of life. Twenty premature calves and 10 healthy term calves were enrolled in the study. 2D, M-mode and Doppler echocardiographic examinations were performed at days 1, 2 and 3 after birth to evaluate LV systolic and diastolic functions. Our findings demonstrated that not only was there LV diastolic dysfunction (55% premature calves, 10% term calf at day 1; 65% premature calves, 10% term calf at day 2 and, 75% premature calves, 20% term calf at day 3), but also LV systolic dysfunction (55% premature calves, 60% term calf at day 1; 55% premature calves, 50% term calf at day 2, and 45% premature calves, 40% term calf at day 3) deteriorated in both term and premature calves. In conclusion, the present study, which was the first comparative echocardiographic assessment of LV systolic and diastolic functions in term and premature newborn calves, showed that both systolic and diastolic dysfunctions might occur in term and premature calves.

Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension is a rare disease reported in humans and dogs diagnosed as persistent elevation of pulmonary arterial blood pressure without predisposing or associated diseases. A four-month-old pot-bellied pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) was presented for decreased appetite, lethargy, respiratory distress, and occasional syncope. On physical examination, the pig was tachypneic with labored breathing, with a distended abdomen and a bilateral grade 4-5/6 parasternal systolic heart murmur. Systolic pulmonary arterial pressure was estimated at 95 mmHg by Doppler echocardiography, consistent with severe pulmonary hypertension. At autopsy, there was dilation of the main pulmonary artery and right ventricle. The lungs were diffusely rubbery, and there was tricavitary effusion. Microscopically, there was severe widespread pulmonary arterial concentric medial hypertrophy with rare plexiform lesions. The clinical history and gross and microscopic findings supported a diagnosis of idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension with subsequent right-sided congestive heart failure. Primary (idiopathic) pulmonary arterial hypertension should be considered as a differential diagnosis in young pigs with right-sided congestive heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Left-sided congestive heart failure (CHF) is characterized by increased filling pressures and related Doppler echocardiographic (DE) filling patterns. HYPOTHESIS: Doppler echocardiographic variables of left ventricular filling derived from transmitral flow, pulmonary vein flow, and tissue Doppler can be used to detect CHF in cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). ANIMALS: Forty-seven client-owned cats. METHODS: Prospective clinical cohort study. Cats underwent physical examination, thoracic radiography, analysis of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), and transthoracic echocardiography and were divided into 3 age-matched groups: Group 1 (apparently healthy control), Group 2 (preclinical HCM), and Group 3 (HCM and CHF). Measured and calculated variables included respiratory rate, DE estimates, serum NT-proBNP concentration, and radiographic CHF score. Groups were compared using ANOVA, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and multivariate analyses were used to identify diagnostic cutoffs for the detection of CHF. RESULTS: Fifteen cats were in Group 1, 17 in Group 2, and 15 in Group 3. The ROC analysis indicated that the ratio of peak velocity of early diastolic transmitral flow to peak velocity of late diastolic transmitral flow (area under the curve [AUC], 1.0; diagnostic cutoff, 1.77; P = .001), ratio of left atrial size to aortic annular dimension (AUC, 0.91; diagnostic cutoff, 1.96; P = .003), left atrial diameter (AUC, 0.89; cutoff, 18.5 mm; P = .004), diastolic functional class (AUC, 0.89; cutoff, class 2; P = .005), respiratory (AUC, 0.79; cutoff, 36 breaths per minute [brpm]; P = .02), and the ratio of the peak velocity of fused early and late transmitral flow velocities to the peak velocity of the fused early and late diastolic tissue Doppler waveforms (AUC, 0.74; cutoff, 15.1; P = .05) performed best for detecting CHF. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Various DE variables can be used to detect CHF in cats with HCM. Determination of the clinical benefit of such variables in initiating treatments and assessing treatment success needs further study.

BACKGROUND: Heart murmurs are detected commonly in apparently healthy cats during routine physical examination, and Doppler echocardiography ultimately is required to identify the source of flow turbulence causing the murmur. However, in some cases, the origin of the murmur cannot be identified on echocardiographic examination, even by experienced clinicians. The application of gentle pressure with the ultrasound transducer against the chest wall of a cat can induce temporary narrowing of the mid-right ventricular (RV) lumen, causing blood flow turbulence even in the absence of cardiac abnormalities. OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESES: To evaluate the effect of pressure of the ultrasound transducer against the chest wall of cats during echocardiography (provocative testing) on RV blood flow. The main hypothesis is that provocative testing can increase RV outflow velocity and cause flow turbulence. The second hypothesis is that the effect of this maneuver is independent of changes in heart rate during testing. ANIMALS: Sixty-one client-owned, apparently healthy cats with heart murmurs on physical examination. METHODS: Retrospective review of echocardiographic examinations of 723 cats presented for investigation of a heart murmur. RESULTS: Outflow systolic velocity increased from 1.05 ± 0.26 to 1.94 ± 0.51 m/s during provocative testing (P < .0001); no correlation was found between RV outflow peak velocity and heart rate during provocative testing (P = .34; r = 0.1237). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Right ventricular outflow tract obstruction and associated heart murmur can be iatrogenically induced in apparently healthy cats by increasing pressure on the right chest wall with an ultrasound probe.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to report normal echocardiographic values in healthy guinea pigs. ANIMALS, MATERIALS, AND METHODS: Twenty-two privately owned, apparently healthy, conscious guinea pigs underwent complete transthoracic echocardiography. Left ventricular (LV), right ventricular, left atrial, and aortic root dimensions were measured, as were forward flow velocities across the mitral, aortic, and pulmonic valves. The effects of age, body weight, sex, and heart rate on these variables were also investigated. RESULTS: The median age (interquartile range) was 3.0 (1.8-4.0) years with a body weight of 902 (822-998) grams. Echocardiography was feasible in all conscious animals. Early and late diastolic transmitral flow waves were summated in 17 of 22 individuals. In the remaining five animals, the two waves were reversed (E wave-to-A wave velocity less than 1.0). A positive correlation was detected between body weight and LV internal diameter at end-diastole and end-systole and left atrial diameter (P < 0.05). Heart rate was negatively correlated with LV internal diameter at end-systole (r = -0.463, P = 0.035). Age was positively correlated with LV posterior wall thickness at end-diastole and aortic diameter (P < 0.05). LV internal diameter at end-systole was larger in males than in females (P = 0.012), while fractional shortening was lower (P = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS: Descriptive echocardiography ranges in apparently healthy awake guinea pigs have been provided and can be used for cardiac assessment in these pet animals.

Basic information related to the association between right heart echocardiographic parameters and invasive pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) in dogs with pulmonary hypetension (PH) is scarce. The aim of this study was to examine the association between conventional right heart echocardiographic parameters and invasive PAP by right heart catheterization (RHC) before and after PH. Five female beagle dogs regarded as clinically healthy were used. Echocardiography and RHC were conducted before and after creating chronic embolic pulmonary hypertension (CEPH) models. The acceleration time to ejection time ratio in pulmonary artery flow profile (AT/ET), the ratio of the pulmonary artery and aortic diameter in diastole (PA/Ao), the right pulmonary artery distensibility index by M-mode method (RPAD M-mode), the normalized right ventricular internal diameter in diastole (RVIDdn), and the normalized tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSEn) were correlated with the invasive systolic PAP (sPAP), mean PAP (mPAP) and diastolic PAP (dPAP). Multiple linear regression analysis identified AT/ET and RVIDdn as independent predictors of sPAP, PA/Ao and RVIDdn as independent predictors of mPAP, and PA/Ao and RPAD M-mode as independent predictors of dPAP. AT/ET and PA/Ao had high sensitivity and specificity for predicting CEPH. In conclusion, AT/ET, PA/Ao, RPAD M-mode, RVIDdn and TAPSEn were significantly correlated with invasive PAP and alterations in PA/Ao or AT/ET might enable clinicians to predict PH, even if tricuspid regurgitation is not observed.

INTRODUCTION: Non-invasive diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension (PH) relies on estimation of pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) via Doppler echocardiographic measurement of tricuspid regurgitation pressure gradient (TRPG). The pulmonary vein-to-right pulmonary artery ratio (PV/PA) recently has been described for the detection of pulmonary venous congestion. Whether this variable could be used to detect the presence of precapillary PH is unknown. The objective of the present study was to investigate the diagnostic value of PV/PA for prediction of TRPG, as a surrogate of PAP, in dogs with PH of precapillary origin. ANIMALS: Sixty-seven client-owned dogs were included in the study. METHODS: This was a retrospective study. Dogs with a measurable TRPG were included and classified into group 1 (TRPG < 30 mmHg), group 2 (TRPG 30-49 mmHg), group 3 (TRPG 50-80 mmHg), or group 4 (TRPG > 80 mmHg). The PV/PA, acceleration time-to-ejection time ratio of pulmonary artery flow, main pulmonary artery diameter-to-aortic diameter ratio, and right pulmonary artery distensibility index were measured retrospectively from cineloops in each dog. RESULTS: The PV/PA measured by both two-dimensional (2D) and time-motion mode(MM) echocardiography decreased proportionally with PH severity. Using regression analysis, PV/PA (2D) was identified as the strongest predictor for TRPG (R2 = 0.70, p < 0.0001) among other variables studied, with a good diagnostic accuracy (area under the curve = 0.94) for moderate PH (TRPG > 50 mmHg) using a cutoff value of < 0.70 (sensitivity = 96%, specificity = 82%). CONCLUSIONS: Results of the present study suggest that PV/PA can be useful as an additional, non-invasive, and indirect variable to identify precapillary PH in dogs.

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) caused by left-sided congestive heart failure (L-CHF) is common in dogs and contributes to clinical signs and outcome. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of Doppler echocardiography-derived PH in a population of cats with L-CHF. ANIMALS: The study involved 131 cats with L-CHF and 56 control cats. METHODS: The study design is retrospective, observational study. Tricuspid regurgitation velocity, right atrial dimension, right ventricular (RV) dimension and function, RV wall thickness, pulmonary artery (PA) dimension, Doppler-derived systolic time intervals of PA flow, and presence of septal flattening were evaluated. Pulmonary hypertension was considered if tricuspid regurgitation velocity was >2.7 m/s. RESULTS: Tricuspid regurgitation was present in 57/131 (44%) of cats with L-CHF and 24/56 (43%) in control cats based on color flow Doppler. Doppler-derived of PH was identified in 22/131 cats with L-CHF (17%). In 15/22 cats, PH was associated with cardiomyopathy, in 5/22 cases with congenital heart disease, and in 2/22 cases with other causes. Cats with Doppler-derived PH more often had chronic L-CHF, as opposed to acute L-CHF (p<0.05). All cats with Doppler-derived PH had subjectively-assessed right-sided heart enlargement, with larger right atrial and RV diameters (p<0.001), increased RV wall thickness (p<0.05), and higher prevalence of septal flattening (<0.001) and PA enlargement (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Pulmonary hypertension identified by Doppler echocardiography is not a common finding in cats with L-CHF. Right-sided heart enlargement, more frequently observed, may raise the suspicion of PH in cats with L-CHF.

This study aimed to assess the effects of incremental doses of dobutamine on diastolic function in healthy and rapid ventricular apical pacing (RVAP)-induced cardiac dysfunction anesthetized dogs. Inotropic and lusitropic effects of dobutamine (2, 4, 8, and 12 µg kg-1  min-1 ) were assessed through left ventricle (LV) pressure-volume relation and Doppler echocardiography in six female dogs before and after 8 weeks of RVAP. Peak rate of LV pressure fall (-dP/dtmin ) improved with doses >4 µg kg-1  min-1 in healthy (4,490 ± 970 vs. 3,265 ± 471 mmHg/s, p < 0.05) and >8 µg kg-1  min-1 in RVAP dogs (3,385 ± 1,122 vs. 1,864 ± 849 mmHg/s, p < 0.05) while the time constant of relaxation (tau) reduced with doses >4 µg kg-1  min-1 in both groups (healthy: 24.0 ± 3.7 vs. 28.2 ± 4.9 ms; RVAP: 32.6 ± 8.5 vs. 37.5 ± 11.4 ms, p < 0.05) comparing with baseline. Indices of relaxation (-dP/dtmin and tau) suggested preserved lusitropic response in contrast with markedly reduced indices of contractility in the RVAP group compared with healthy group at same infusion rates. Doppler echocardiography showed significant reduction of elastic recoil in failing hearts. The results of this study demonstrated maximal positive lusitropic effects of dobutamine at a dose of 8 µg kg-1  min-1 in ventricular pacing-induced cardiac dysfunction without further impairment of ventricular filling.

A 2-year 10-month, male neutered, crossbreed dog presented for evaluation of cyanosis and exercise intolerance. Doppler echocardiography revealed severe dilation of the right atrium and right ventricle with moderate pulmonary hypertension. Right-to-left shunting across a large ostium secundum atrial septal defect was confirmed by contrast echocardiography. Thoracic radiography revealed a vascular pattern together with cardiomegaly. Computed tomography angiography identified an anomalous pulmonary venous connection in which all pulmonary veins, apart from the right middle vein, coalesced into a single, large aneurysmal vein that then drained into the right atrium via the cranial vena cava. The distal opening of the right middle pulmonary vein could not be determined. A presumptive diagnosis of partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection was made. The dog was medically managed with sildenafil (1.5 mg/kg by mouth [PO] every 8 h) and remained clinically stable for 2 months before euthanasia due to worsening exercise intolerance. On postmortem examination, all pulmonary veins, including the right middle vein, were shown to communicate with a single, large central vein. This large vein then connected with the right atrium via the cranial vena cava, consistent with a total anomalous pulmonary venous connection. This case report describes a rare congenital abnormality which has not been previously reported in a mature dog.

INTRODUCTION: The time from the onset of the P wave on electrocardiogram to the peak of late diastolic wave signal (PA-TDI interval) recorded by left atrial pulsed-wave tissue Doppler imaging (PW-TDI) is a surrogate of the total atrial conduction time, and it can predict the development of new-onset atrial fibrillation (AF) in people. This study investigated whether PA-TDI interval measured with PW-TDI at the level of lateral aspect of the mitral valve annulus could identify dogs which developed AF within 6 months after echocardiography. ANIMALS: Forty-two dogs with different cardiac diseases were included; 21 dogs developed AF within 6 months after echocardiography (AF group) and 21 dogs did not (non-AF group). Each AF case was matched with a non-AF case for body weight and left atrium:aortic root ratio. METHODS: This was a retrospective study. Review of signalment, underlying disease and echocardiography data were included. PA-TDI interval was measured offline from acquired PW-TDI images. PA-TDI interval and standard echocardiographic variables were compared between groups. Receiver operator characteristic curves were used to identify the best AF predictor. Univariate and multivariate regression were used to evaluate predictors of PA-TDI interval. RESULTS: The AF group had significantly greater 2D left atrial maximal diameter, left-ventricular (LV) end-diastolic volume, M-Mode LV internal diameter and LV end-systolic volume index. PA-TDI was significantly longer in the AF group, and it was superior to other echocardiographic variables in predicting AF development within 6 months (AUC = 0.896). CONCLUSIONS: PA-TDI interval measured with PW-TDI at the lateral mitral valve annulus may identify dogs at risk of developing AF.

OBJECTIVE To assess the effects of a constant rate infusion (CRI) of remifentanil hydrochloride on left ventricular systolic and diastolic function in healthy propofol-anesthetized dogs. ANIMALS 6 healthy Beagles. PROCEDURES Each dog underwent 2 experimental treatments separated by a 7-day interval. In 1 treatment, anesthesia was induced with propofol and maintained with a CRI of propofol (0.6 mg/kg/min); dogs also received a CRI of saline (0.9% NaCl) solution. In the other treatment, anesthesia was similarly induced and maintained with propofol; dogs also received a CRI of remifentanil (0.3 µg/kg/min). Doppler echocardiographic and hemodynamic variables of interest were determined at baseline (before anesthesia) and at 20, 40, and 60 minutes following the simultaneous start of the 2 CRIs of each treatment; all CRIs were administrated for 60 minutes. RESULTS For the 2 treatments, end-diastolic and end-systolic volume indices did not differ from baseline or at any time point. Peak tissue Doppler-derived mitral annulus systolic velocity decreased from baseline with both treatments; however, no differences were found between treatments at any time point. Mean arterial blood pressure decreased similarly with both treatments. Heart rate and Doppler-determined cardiac index decreased significantly with the propofol-remifentanil treatment, compared with findings for the propofol-saline solution treatment. For the propofol-remifentanil treatment, the ratio of peak velocity flow in early diastole to that in late diastole remained > 1.80, whereas the ratio of early to late Doppler-derived mitral annulus velocity had a normal relaxation pattern. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results of this study indicated that a CRI of remifentanil administered along with a CRI of propofol does not impair left ventricular systolic and diastolic function in healthy dogs.

Although the major pathological feature of chronic mitral valve disease is mitral regurgitation, myocardial dysfunction has been suggested to be present in dogs with chronic mitral valve disease. However, accurate assessment of myocardial function remains challenging. Doppler-derived rate of left ventricular pressure change is a simple, less load-dependent method for evaluating myocardial function. We aimed to evaluate Doppler-derived rate of left ventricular pressure change for assessing myocardial function in different stages of dogs with chronic mitral valve disease. This analytical cross-sectional study recruited 55 client-owned dogs with chronic mitral valve disease prospectively. Based on physical examination, indirectly measured blood pressure, routine hematologic and biochemistry examinations, thoracic radiography, electrocardiography, and echocardiography, dogs were diagnosed as mitral valve disease and excluded for systemic diseases and other cardiac diseases. They were classified according to the International Small Animal Cardiac Health Council scales. Doppler-derived rates of left ventricular pressure rise and fall (dP/dt and -dP/dt) were analyzed by two investigators using continuous-wave Doppler imaging. Doppler-derived dP/dt was higher in dogs of class IIIa than in those of the other classes, whereas values of -dP/dt decreased significantly with the severity of congestive heart failure. The peak velocity of the early diastolic wave and -dP/dt were identified as independent predictors of congestive heart failure. Our findings suggested that Doppler-derived dP/dt and -dP/dt, used in combination with conventional echocardiographic variables, could allow a better understanding of myocardial dysfunction and a possibility for prediction of the risk of heart failure in dogs with chronic mitral valve disease.

Our aim was (1) to determine the within-day and between-day variability of several indices of systolic and diastolic right ventricular (RV) function by using conventional echocardiography and speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) (Study 1), (2) to quantify these variables in a large healthy canine population (n = 104) with Doppler-derived estimated systolic pulmonary arterial pressure (SPAP) and left ventricular (LV) function, and (3) to establish the corresponding reference intervals (Study 2). For both studies, RV variables included tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), right fractional area change (RFAC), STE longitudinal systolic strain (StS) of the RV free wall (RVFW) and of the entire RV (i.e., global RV StS), STE longitudinal systolic RVFW strain rate (SRS), and the diastolic early:late strain rate ratio. All but one within- and between-day coefficients of variation (13/14) were < 15%, the lowest being observed for TAPSE (3.6-9.8%), global RV StS (3.8-9.9%), and RVFW StS (3.7-7.3%). SPAP was weakly and negatively correlated with the TAPSE:body weight ratio (rs = -0.26, p = 0.01) and RVFW SRS (rs = -0.23, p < 0.05). Reference intervals (lower and upper limits with 90% confidence intervals) were provided for all variables. STE provides a non-invasive evaluation of RV function that may be used for clinical investigations in canine cardiology.
